Year by Year brief summary of program accomplishments.
In FY11 and the first year of the program we were able to begin developing the brownfields program by recruiting staff whom then began the process of educating staff and community on the what a brownfields program is and what it addresses. This then led into gaining more information on possible brownfields sites within the Community and surrounding areas. The staff then began a baseline inventory list, and public record. The staff also began collaborative relations with the other tribes on Prince of Wales Island and throughout the State. In FY12, the second year of the program the staff enhanced and continued to update the inventory list and the public record. The staff also developed a website, and facebook page as a means to educate and inform the public on the program. Collaborations between the other Island Tribes, ADEC, and tribes throughout Alaska continued. In FY13, the third year, Continued building and updating the program as in years one and two.
In FY14, our CURRENT year, we have identified, and received eligibility of a brownfields site to begin a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment. In May the Brownfields staff with the technical support of KIA Environmental Consulting Service, owned and operated by Cathy Needham, began this assessment. We have conducted a site recon, on the eligible site along with an adjacent property. A map was made of the sites, these sites are listed in the HCA Brownfields inventory list.
On May 27th, 2015 I had the opportunity to participate in a Site visit to Bokan Mountain, to visit the future UCORE (Dodson Ridge) Rare Earth Elements Mine Project and the Old Abandoned Ross Adams Uranium Mine. I was picked up in Hydaburg and accompanied three other participants on a tour of these two mining areas. we First toured the future landmarks for the UCORE Mine Project, and then the Ross Adams Abandoned Mine, unfortunately the USFS representative was unavailable to accompany us on this trip. We were blessed to have the most beautiful weather to make the tour an awesome and amazing. Who can complain about a mountain top view of Kendrick Bay, and the surrounding areas. The Plane ride was simply gorgeous. I hope you enjoy these amazing photos.
